Tackling hunger
in the Goldfields

Families in Western Australia’s Goldfields region are increasingly struggling to put food on the table due to rising costs of living and limited access to affordable groceries. With the help of AngloGold Ashanti Australia, we are tackling hunger town by town.

We have been working towards gaining a better understanding of the nature and food relief requirements in the region, the barriers and complexities of the area, to be able to effectively meet the demand for food relief within the region.

A new two year partnership with AngloGold Ashanti Australia will allow us to better support the Kalgoorlie branch and the community’s food relief needs. The much-needed funding will allow us to boost up our Everyday Food Essential Range, meaning the branch will have a consistent range of pantry staple items available to customers. The partnership has also seen us create an Emergency Relief Fund to support the Goldfields communities in times of emergencies such as floods, extended power outages and the like.

AngloGold Ashanti Australia are a valued an active local community partner giving back for the greater good. Their support is helping to provide dignity to the most vulnerable Goldfields communities.” said Foodbank WA CEO Kate O’Hara.

AngloGold Ashanti Australia donations

As a part of their two-year commitment to the Kalgoorlie Branch and the Goldfields community, we are collaboratively seeking to provide assistance where it is needed most.

Laverton and Mt Margaret were identified as areas which needed urgent assistance. Laverton, with its community of 900 people, was seen as the highest priority due to the size of the community, closely followed by Mt Margaret with a population of 50 people, which is located 50km out of Laverton and has no food and grocery shops whatsoever.

Thanks to AngloGold Ashanti Australia and the support of Compass and Team Global Express who provided transport, the two communities received much needed food supplies in December, the equivalent of 16,000 meals, which were delivered to the Laverton Cross Cultural Association who then distributed it too members of the community who needed the support the most. Future deliveries will be made over the financial year to the community providing them with a constant supply of essential items.

Together with AngloGold Ashanti Australia we will continue to work to identify and support the emergency food requirements of the most vulnerable people in the Goldfields region of Western Australia.

Our single vision is to tackle the issue of hunger and positively impact the lives of community members in the region with lasting change.
