South32, Southern Ports and Talison Lithium support their local community
The cost-of-living crisis continues to place a significant strain on families and individuals in Western Australia.
The cost of groceries and utility bills are constantly rising, with people having to make near-impossible decisions to ensure they keep a roof over their heads.
These circumstances are pushing many Western Australians into financial stress, and they are struggling to feed themselves and their families. Foodbank WA’s regional branches, in particular, are overwhelmed, with logistical and transportation issues adding to the increase in foot traffic.
In 2024 the Foodbank Bunbury branch experienced a 22% increase in demand compared to the same period 2023.

Thanks to South32, Southern Ports and Talison Lithium, longstanding Foodbank WA supporters and proud Bunbury branch partners, we have been able to increase the distribution of food by the branch, supporting Bunbury’s Mobile Foodbank for the southwest region and increasing the availability of fresh fruit, vegetables and dairy requirements for the School Breakfast Program.
The Foodbank Bunbury branch is on track to provide more than last year’s total of 1,463,968 meals this year to vulnerable individuals and families within the region through 61 charity partners and 63 schools.
Foodbank WA’s Hunger Report for 2024 showed that across Australia Food insecurity is being felt more acutely in the regions (37%) compared to metropolitan areas.
In WA, more than 370,000 households experienced food insecurity in the last 12 months.
We are so grateful for the support of South32, Southern Ports and Talison Lithium. Their funding will enable our Bunbury branch to service the most vulnerable members of South West of WA community and ensure that we are in a good operational and service position to cover the anticipated increase in need in the coming weeks and months. Their support will also allow us to purchase the resources necessary to facilitate current and future food programs.” Said Kate O’Hara Foodbank WA CEO.
South32, Southern Ports and Talison Lithium’s commitment to support those in their local area of operations, demonstrates their passion and commitment to deliver positive long-lasting outcomes that enrich the South West community.” Kate continued.
In December 2024 alone, a total of 109,595 meals were distributed.
