Omega Fresh ups the ante
After receiving overwhelming feedback from our customers that healthy, balanced diets were becoming increasingly unaffordable for Western Australian families on low to middle-range incomes in the cost-of-living crisis, we decided to make all our fruits and vegetables free for our customers.
Fast forward almost six months and our customers are thrilled with our fruit and vegetable offering.
Behind the scenes we are working hard with growers to ensure we have plenty of supply. We anticipate that more than a million kilos of fresh produce will be provided free across the State through our branches and Mobile Foodbanks this year.
We are so grateful to the amazing growers and producers we partner with who help to ensure that no family goes without.
Omega Fresh have donated vegetables to us for a few years now but decided to step it up a notch in 2024, boosting our fresh vegetable offering by a massive 7,000kg, donating an abundance of eggplant, zucchini, greens and sprouts just to name a few.
Eggplant, zucchini, greens, and sprouts are nutritional powerhouses, offering a myriad of health benefits. Rich in antioxidants, eggplants combat free radicals, promoting heart health and reducing inflammation. Their fibre content supports digestion and helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels. Zucchini, with its high-water content, aids hydration and is an excellent low-calorie source of vitamin C, which boosts immunity and skin health.
Leafy greens, such as spinach and kale, are loaded with vitamins A, C, and K, as well as iron and calcium, supporting bone health, vision, and overall vitality. Their abundance of dietary fibre promotes digestive regularity and gut health. Sprouts, such as alfalfa or broccoli sprouts, are nutrient-dense and high in enzymes that enhance digestion and nutrient absorption. They are also rich in vitamins and antioxidants that support cellular repair and immune function.
Phong Le, known as the Zucchini King, operates out of the Perth Markets and has supported Foodbank for many years decided to step up his support last year, saying “seeing the effects of what the cost-of-living crisis was doing to so many in the community, I was determined to do what I could to help. I also hate to see food go to waste, so it’s win-win.”
We are so pleased that our customers can incorporate these nutritious vegetables into their diets helping their overall well-being.
