The unsung hero of the
vegetable world
Brothers David and Ben Ellement have been donating leeks from their Mandogalup property to Foodbank for many years now.
We are grateful for the weekly donations of approximately 200kgs as are our customers.
Leeks are often underrated in the vegetable world. They are a very versatile vegetable related to the onion and garlic family and are also very nutrient-dense, meaning that they’re low in calories yet high in vitamins and minerals, particularly magnesium and vitamins A, C, and K. They boast small amounts of fibre, copper, vitamin B6, iron, and folate.
They are also rich in antioxidants and sulfur compounds, especially kaempferol and allicin which are thought to protect your body from disease.
If this wasn’t enough, leeks are known to contain heart-healthy plant compounds shown to reduce inflammation, cholesterol, blood pressure, the formation of blood clots, and your overall risk of heart disease.
While more research is needed, some studies do show that leeks may help lower blood sugar levels, promote brain function, and fight infections.
With a gentle and mild flavour, they are easy to add to just about any dish whether it be a soup, salad or side dish, give them a try today.
Thank you to Ellement Produce, we hope to continue this great partnership for years to come
