Healthier food choices build
healthier minds and bodies

Thanks to funding support from City of Fremantle, we have been running a series of 7 nom! Youth sessions between July and December to help young people aged 12 to 18 years make informed decisions about their health and wellbeing.

Packed with interactive workshops, curriculum linked education sessions and practical hands-on cooking classes, the program teaches essential food literacy skills to youth living in the Fremantle community, empowering them with the knowledge, skills and confidence to make healthier nutrition choices.

The program kicked off in July with our first group from Headspace who joined us at the Healthy Eating Hub in Fremantle to learn more about healthy eating and shopping on a budget, while having fun making our famous Crazy Corn Dip, mini pizzas, Speedy Stew as well as our renowned Ninja Noodle Mince and delicious sweet Choc Amazeballs.  Since then, we have also partnered with Fremantle Fastrack at North Lake Senior Campus and Life Without Barriers Fremantle to engage more young people in the Fremantle community.

Together with the City of Fremantle, over the course of five months, this collaborative project will deliver age appropriate and specialised nutrition education programs to between 30-90 young people living, studying or working in the Fremantle area. The project will facilitate and further enhance the important connection of social engagement, with every session ending with enjoying the budget-friendly and easy meals cooked together as a group. Each program has the capability to impact community members healthy eating and cooking ability in a fun and social environment.

Imagine a world where every young person has the knowledge and skills to make healthy choices. With support like this from the City of Fremantle we can make this vision a reality and address health inequity as a priority, by enhancing food literacy skills of disadvantaged and vulnerable youth living in the City of Fremantle region through our specialised, resourceful, hands-on and fun nutrition education and cooking programs.” said Foodbank WA CEO Kate O’Hara.

Thanks to this initiative, our nom! sessions can empower youth by nurturing essential life skills and fostering a sense of belonging, creativity and confidence which highlights the City of Fremantle’s deep commitment to their community.” Kate O’Hara continued.

Program participants to date have had the opportunity to make meaningful change to improve their long-term health outcomes, with very positive feedback with all participants delivering a 9.5/10 rating for their session.

Join us in celebrating WA Mental Health Week (5-12 Oct) as we highlight the strong link between nutrition and mental health. With the right knowledge and resources, we can create a lasting impact on our youth’s future by supporting their journey towards a healthier life.
