Avos – How do you like yours?
Creamy nutty and delicious, they can be added to salads, smoothies, a dish like guacamole or be their own hero just by being spread on some bread, breakfast lunch and probably dinner.
Avocados which are botanically a berry, are known for being nutrient dense and are loved by kids and adult alike. Avocados can often be seen as a luxury purchase as they can sometimes be considered too pricey for the shopping basket every week.
Thanks to the Avocado Collective, each fortnight our customers have access to almost a tonne of delicious and nutritious avocados. Healthy fats, phytonutrients and high potassium levels are among the health benefits of avocados which may be one of the reasons we see customers braving the fridge section of our warehouse as soon as we receive an avocado delivery!
The Avocado Collective supports over 70 growers across the Southwest region of WA, from small businesses just starting out with small farms right through to farms with sprawling acres. They are farmers supporting farmers both as a business and as a community.
On advice from the Avocado Collective – choose rips avocados which are soft but free from dark sunken spots. A firm avocado will ripen in a paper bag or in a fruit basket at room temperature within a few days. Once ripe they will keep in the fridge for a day or two. Slice around the seed and twist the two halves to separate, then use a spoon to remove the seed. To store cut fruit, sprinkle any exposed cut surface with lemon or lime juice or white vinegar to prevent the flesh from browning, or alternatively press cling wrap firmly on the exposed edge.
Avocados have surged in popularity in the last few years, thanks to social media and restaurant menus where avocado-focused dishes like avocado on toast became Instagram-friendly symbols of a healthy, trendy lifestyle.
