Anti-Poverty Week 2024

Last month, we proudly took part in Anti-Poverty Week, with the theme “Listening to Our Children and Youth.” The event at Government House Ballroom gathered nearly 200 attendees, including community organisations, government representatives, and child well-being experts, all committed to addressing child poverty in Western Australia.

Anti-Poverty Week 2024

His Excellency Chris Dawson AM, Governor of Western Australia, and Mrs. Dawson opened the event, with participants from the Governor’s Sparks Program as MCs. The morning featured youth speakers, like Indigo Ellis, who shared personal stories of poverty’s impact, resonating deeply and even drawing media attention through Triple J and 7 News. In the afternoon, Emeritus Professor Donna Cross provided insights into the effects of poverty on children’s development, reinforcing the need for action.

100 teddy bears were displayed, with 17 orange ones symbolising the 7 in 10 Western Australian children affected by poverty. The children of Ardyaloon curated an inspiring “Our World in Photos” exhibition, which served as a focal point, reminding us of the resilience and potential of young people despite their hardship.

WACOSS Chair Mark Glasson concluded the day with a call to action. Anti-Poverty Week reminds us of the nearly one million Australian children (975,587) living in poverty, and the importance of uniting for a future where every child has the chance to thrive.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who joined us in this journey, standing together to bring hope, dignity, and positive change to the lives of children and youth experiencing poverty in Western Australia.

Hunger doesn't break for Christmas.
