The last 12 to 18 months has been hard for many South Australian families, with COVID and job losses affecting their ability to put food on the table for their children. In fact, now more than 135,000 South Australians are accessing our services each month. One third of these are children.

WE WERE REALLY STRUGGLING DURING COVID WITH OUR FINANCES AND WE COULDN’T AFFORD TO FEED THE KIDS. IT WAS REALLY HARD. WE DIDN’T KNOW WHAT WE WERE GOING TO DO. IT’S REALLY HARD WHEN YOU HAVE A YOUNG FAMILY.

For Kate and Matt Harris, who were once a two-income family, life changed overnight when both lost their jobs and the resulting impact meant the couple struggled to put food on the table.

Kate and Matt weren’t alone – more than 13% of South Aussies were experiencing the same hardship and turned to Foodbank for support. The pressure eased but unfortunately, it was short lived.

Kate and Matt know that with funds already tight, this Winter will be really tough for the family.

Families like the Harris family are the new face of hunger in South Australia. The Harris family is far from alone. With the changes to JobKeeper and JobSeeker, so many more families are struggling to put food on the table. Now Winter is putting additional pressure on already struggling South Australians.
