HELP SOUTH AUSTRALIAN FAMILIES IN CRISIS

“I cry myself to sleep worrying about what I am going to feed my kids”

Help mothers in crisis rebuild their lives by giving a tax deductible donation.

Today a devoted mum who is triumphing over domestic violence needs your support to feed her children. Angela is a hard-working mother of two daughters. Few people around Angela knew, but during her 15 year marriage, she suffered intimidation, psychological abuse and even physical violence from her partner.

Overnight, Angela lost everything: her marriage, her home and her livelihood. She never thought it could happen to her. At times, she feared for her life. Every part of Angela’s life was impacted: even her ability to buy food was restricted.

“I was scared and my girls were scared,” says Angela. “It makes me sad and ashamed to think about it.”

Tragically, 1 in 3 women in Australia have experienced domestic violence – many of them carers to young children.

Most people don’t think of domestic violence when they think about Foodbank, but the sad fact is an unsafe volatile home makes it impossible for a parent to consistently provide meals for their children.

As you might know, at Foodbank we source healthy food from manufacturers, growers and supermarkets to distribute to people experiencing hardship like Angela. But we can’t do it without generous people like you.

Since she worked up the courage to leave the family home she shared with her partner, all Angela cares about is making sure her daughters Erin 6, and Claire 4, have a normal life like other children; free from violence and poverty.

Soon after Angela left her dangerous marriage, her youngest child Claire asked if she could have a party for her 5th birthday just like other little girls. Angela would have to say “no” to Claire. She was devastated. She couldn’t even afford cereal, bread and milk, let alone party food.

I get so sad when I look at other mums happy and laughing,” she says. “That used to be me! I feel as though I am living a nightmare.”

No parent wants their child to experience poverty and miss out. Thankfully, just when Angela began to doubt her ability to rebuild her life, she received a gift that changed everything. It was her first hamper of fruit, vegetables and groceries from Foodbank. After she collected the food she sat in her car and sobbed with relief.

There were Rice Bubbles in the box, and I thought ‘I can make chocolate crackles for Claire for her birthday’,” she remembers, smiling.

When you support Foodbank, it’s not just about the food you help provide – when you donate you are also giving hurting people like Angela the dignity that can only come from having the capacity to provide for her kids.

That is why a tax deductible donation today is so vital for parents recovering from domestic violence. It means they can establish normal mealtimes for their kids to help create a safe, happy home. Research has found that financial and food security is an important step to help a parent break the cycle of domestic violence.

We need your help. By making a donation of $100 it can equate to $600 value of essential, nutritious food, and is 100% tax deductible. Please help Foodbank SA, so we can put meals on the table of South Australian families in need.
