FOODBANK SA SCHOOL PROGRAMS
PROVIDING MORE THAN FOOD…

The start to the 2022 school year has been unlike any other we have experienced in the 17 years of operating our school food relief programs here in South Australia. The delayed start to school has put additional pressure on already struggling families. How do we know? We listen. We hear their stories directly; the feedback from parents, teachers, principals and school support workers. We hear their heart ache as they hear rumbling little tummies.

“Do you know how hard it is for a parent to tell their kids there isn’t enough milk or bread for breakfast? That’s the sad reality for some families in our school community.

At least when they come into school they know they will be able to get a good breakfast. It means our families can stretch their budget a little further to ensure they can put a meal together – they don’t have to skip another meal.” – School Breakfast Coordinator, SA School

THE NEED

COVID-19 has had a profound effect on many aspects of people’s lives, so it is not surprising that it has had a massive impact on the food security of South Aussie kids. In fact, we know that 74,800 South Australian children are experiencing hunger – which is a staggering statistic. With food insecurity reaching crisis point in South Australia, many families are unsure where their next meal will come from. Further highlighting the importance of School Programs to ensure that no child goes hungry here in our state.

OUR IMPACT

For over 17 years Foodbank SA has provided food relief to South Australian schools right across regional, remote and metropolitan South Australia to reduce rumbling tummies. Today, Foodbank is the largest provider of food relief and by far the largest provider of school based food relief programs in South Australia! In the last 12 months we have provided more than 1 MILLION meals to students right across the state.

A student expressed to us that  – “this has come just at the right time for us, we needed this, things are really tough for us at the moment”. – School Program Coordinator & Student, SA School

Last year alone, Foodbank SA:

  • Directly provided more than 418,500 school breakfasts free of charge via the Foodbank SA School Breakfast Program.
  • Provided more than 39,000 Building Health Program packs (take home food packs for the weekend) free to the most vulnerable children and their families in our community.
  • Supplied over 1.45 tonne of fresh fruit and vegetables for school-based programs in the APY Lands every WEEK.
  • Provided over 60 tonne of fresh fruit, vegetables and bread free of charge to support other organisations offering school breakfast programs.
  • Distributed approximately 5,000 Young Women’s Packs to school students experiencing period poverty.

With schools now going back to face to face learning it means we have recommenced our support to over 550 School Programs operating in South Australia. Our Foodbank volunteers are already on the road delivering food for School Breakfast Programs – on a mission to ensure no South Australian school children go hungry…

Hear the Impact

Our team recently spent time with several schools participating in our programs and heard firsthand the impact these programs have on the individual child, the classroom, the school, the family and more broadly the wider community.

It’s more than Food…

MATCHED GIFT

Thanks to our friends at Adelaide Airport for every $1 donated, Foodbank will be able to put 6 breakfasts on the table via a matched giving program*. If you think missing a flight is bad, imagine how it would feel having to tell the kids they are missing another meal.

$200 = $400 = 1,200 breakfasts

“You are not just giving to a program… just never forget that it does filter down to an individual little child ... that’s who you are giving to in the end… they’re actual people who are hungry … If you can just remember that.” – Janine, Ascot Park Primary School
