Foodbank Christmas 2020
HOW DO YOU TELL YOUR 7-YEAR OLD DAUGHTER THERE IS NO CHRISTMAS…
The year 2020 has been a difficult year and as a result South Aussie families – just like Lauren and Nick’s, will face a particularly hard Christmas, struggling to put food on the table for their families.
At the beginning of the year Lauren was diagnosed with a chronic illness, forcing her to stop work, Nick then lost his job as a result of COVID-19. For the once two income family, life changed overnight and the resulting impact meant the couple struggled to put food on the table for their family.
It is challenging enough for a family who is navigating an illness and job loss but when access to food becomes an issue, when you are no longer able to satisfy a very basic need, it is demoralising. The ability to put a meal on the table is something many of us take for granted.
“Once we had paid for weekly bills, it left very little for food. The illness was hard enough but to then not have food to feed the kids was devastating.” Lauren described.
The family were originally referred to a Foodbank Food Hub with a Food Hub voucher, a voucher that enabled them to purchase enough food for 2 weeks.
“We were given a voucher for the Food Hub that kept us going for around 2 weeks. It helped provide enough ingredients to make good meals and it meant we didn’t have to worry about how we would feed the kids.”
That is why we are asking for your support today to ensure that there’s always food on the table for South Australian families doing it tough, like Lauren and Nick’s – especially at Christmas.
Coming to terms with their new ‘normal’, Christmas was going to be another challenge that the family were struggling to prepare for.
“We are really going to struggle this Christmas to be honest, I don’t want to say in front of the kids because I don’t want them to know how bad it really is. Every day is hard but Christmas is going to be really hard. How do you tell your 7 year old there is no Christmas?” said Lauren.
By giving $156 before 21 December, you will make a difference in the lives of families like Lauren and Nicks, providing enough food for 1 month.
Lauren and Nick never thought something like this would happen to them. It was not the life they had envisaged or worked so hard for. Lauren described it being like watching a sad movie or someone else’s life unfold – It is heartbreaking and dehumanising.
Thanks to the support of generous people like you, Lauren and Nick, along with other families that have had a tough year will be able to put food on the table and feed their children.
Foodbank were able to register Lauren and Nick for a Foodbank Christmas Hamper to help ease the burden.
“Knowing we are receiving the Foodbank Christmas hamper has provided us with a ‘spark’ of hope that other people out there really do care about us and we are not alone. Foodbank you are literally lifesavers. You are a gift to anyone that gets help from you”.
It is thanks to you, that Foodbank can supply essential food items to families like Lauren and Nick’s, and restore their faith.
