An Update from our CEO
Right now, cost of living pressures are being felt right across the state and many families who are already struggling to feed themselves are finding it increasingly difficult to put food on the table for their kids.
The statistics are quite staggering; in the last 12 months, 52% of Australian households with children experienced food insecurity at some point, and in South Australia, we now have 78,000 children who are living in severely food insecure households. For that reason, Foodbank’s school food programs are vitally important. We are now supporting over 550 schools and for that we would like to thank our partners at Health Partners, A2 Milk, Credit Union SA, Foodland Stores and the South Australian Education Department, as we can’t do it alone. This year, thanks to Variety SA, we’ve also launched the Foodbank Variety School Lunch Program; a new school lunch program already providing food to 80 schools.
We know that interest rates are going to go up, putting more pressure on rents and housing prices, which will result in more families doing it tough and many more people turning to Foodbank every day. For that reason, we must continue to get support from the community. We’ve asked the South Australian Government to provide more support, to underpin our programs and to enable us to get to parts of the state that we’re not getting to. We’re also asking the South Australian community to get on board and help us so that no South Australian falls through the cracks and no child goes hungry!
We’re just about to launch our 2023 Women of Influence Luncheon, a fantastic event held at the Adelaide Showgrounds on Friday, 12 May. All ticket proceeds will go towards supporting our food programs for families in our community and raise much needed funds to help us solve food insecurity in this state. We look forward to seeing you at the event!
