What is the Foodbank and ABC Gives appeal?
Foodbank and ABC Radio have partnered together once again to brighten the community and end hunger this holiday season. We are asking the South Australian and Broken Hills public to make a monetary donation or a non-perishable food items to help those in need.
Where is the money raised going?
Donations raised will go to Foodbank to help feed South and Central Australians experiencing food insecurity. 100% of the donations will go to food procurement by Foodbank to get the right food to those in need. Foodbank can turn $1 into 2 meals.
Why has the ABC chosen this charity at this time?
This year, cost of living pressures are higher than they have ever been. The prices of essentials like food, health, education, housing, power and transport have climbed so much in the last year that people who are already struggling are susceptible to sudden bill shock and financial disadvantage. The current economic climate means people are turning to charity who would never have dreamed of seeking such support in the past. So it’s not just traditionally vulnerable groups such as the homeless seeking food relief, but also older women, single parents and even people who are working.
Why does Foodbank need your help?
This year over 150,000 South Australian households have experienced severe food insecurity. That’s more than 1 in 3 South Aussie households.
Each year, Foodbank SA distributes more than eight million meals, but demand has increased alarmingly and we need to ensure no one goes without.
This is happening right on our doorstep, in metro Adelaide and regional towns across the State.
What is Foodbank?
Foodbank is the largest hunger relief organisation in South and Central Australia. A non-profit, non-denominational organisation with a vision to achieve a South and Central Australia without hunger.
Foodbank supports more than 135,000+ South and Central Australians every month with food relief. One third of these are children.
How will donations be used?
Donations to Foodbank SA through the ABC Gives Appeal will go directly to help feed South and Central Australians experiencing food insecurity. Foodbank will use funds and cans donated to support those in need, including directly via the Foodbank Food Hubs, front line charities, schools and children’s breakfast programs in metro Adelaide and regional areas including Whyalla, Mount Gambier, Port Lincoln, the Riverland and Broken Hill. Foodbank SA also supports those in need of food relief in Central Australia.
Are my donations tax deductible?
Cash donations above $2 are tax deductible in Australia. You will receive a receipt by email.

What food can I donate?
Please donate non-perishable food, such as tuna, canned ham, canned fruit/veg, rice, pasta, spreads, pasta sauce, tinned spaghetti/beans.
Does the ABC keep any of the monies raised?
No. 100% of contributions go directly to Foodbank SA & NT to put much needed food on the table of those in need.
How will my donation help Foodbank?
Every $1 you donate provides 2 meals for South Australians in need.
- A donation of $46 will provide a hamper for a family in need.
- A donation of $156 will provide food for one month for a family in need.
- A donation of $324 will provide food for three months for a family in need.
